Dear Mr. Guthrie,

I never did get to meet you, but I must thank you for the opportunity to work with Kevin and also have him as my friend. Work wise he has taught me everything I know so when I say thank you to him I should say thank you to you. I have heard a lot of stories about you and how great of a man you were. Today marks the anniversary of your passing. Kevin and I are up North working. So today on your behalf I’ll be taking my friend out for a beer or 2. You raised a good man Mr. Guthrie. He a great friend and father. He’s helped me threw some tuff times. So today is my day to give back to him. 

Dearest Sam,
We are saddened by the news of your passing.  The staff and I at Chino Aesthetic Dental will miss you tremendously.  We always enjoyed hearing about your UTAH adventure and your love for beer and hunting.  Sam, thank you for sharing your life experiences and your always honest opinions about the world.  You will be missed by all of us.  Rest in Peace, my friend.

Uncle Sam,
Today was your viewing and seeing you was hard. It hit me that I won’t see you or talk to you again.  I’m going to miss walking into the house and seeing you in your chair or out in the garage. I’m going to miss talking to you! I will cherish our conversation and always hold you in my heart! You’ve been the best uncle and always told me that I was beautiful and you loved me! You always put a smile on my face! I’m sad Abby won’t be able to grow up knowing you, but I know you will live in our hearts forever and watch over the family always! You are the best uncle and I will miss you so much! 
My favorite memory was when you took Ryan and I fishing! We were so young and had to wake up so early. I remember being so excited. You spent the whole day with us teaching us how to fish and you were so patient and made it such a great experience! Thank you for always being there to give a hug and a big smile! I love you alway! 


I might have met Sam a time or two, but time has faded any memory.  But, considering how much time the "four musketeers" spent together, I'm sure he was a presence when they were stirring up trouble.

“Hey man, want a beer?” 

Those where the first words that where said to me when I first met Sam and now I like to think of myself as his favorite son in-law, although that’s pretty easy since I’m the only one. I haven’t known Sam for a very long time but I sure am blessed for the time that I did. There was never a dull moment whenever I saw him, always cracking jokes one way or another. Always bringing smiles and laughter to everyone near.

Sam, 

I know you’re in heaven right now, you’ve got your feet up, your line in the water and your smiling down on us. In so many different ways letting us know that it’ll be alright and you’re waiting for us to all come home. Till we meet again my friend. We love you.

He’s never met a stranger, for a stranger is just a friend that he hasn’t met yet. 

Sam and Kathy live two doors east of our home on El Morado Ct. We moved here in 1997. How do you describe Sam? Like I told Kathy, Sam was Sam.

The countless times I would walk past their house on my walk, Sam yelling at me from the garage. And then on my way back from my walk, seeing Sam sitting in his recliner watching TV/eating and Kathy sitting in her chair by the window. I saw all their grand kids grow up. And the sparkle in Sam's eyes when they would all visit. You were my neighbor Sam, and we will always remember you. Rest in peace. The Jones Family.

We've known Sam for over 52 years. Met our wives the same day at the same dance. Anita and I went on double dates with them before they were married and after.  A great guy to have as a friend. Our deepest sympathy, love and prayers to Kathy and the family. Our love to everyone.

Freddie was my uncle.  As a child, I saw him at our annual family reunions. He was so handsome and fun, them there was that smile. I vividly remember when he first brought Aunt Kathy home to our Belhaven reunion, although I am not sure if they were married yet. Elvis was huge then and I thought he looked just like him in his Air Force uniform. They were such a gorgeous couple and it continues to be a vivid memory of mine.

The Guthrie family was large and tight knit We had so much fun together and the love was strong. Mom spoke of Uncle Freddie often And with much love. My love and prayers are with all of you.

I do not have the words to express my thoughts and feelings at this time.  As far as memories go, summers were a time for family gatherings, especially the week of July 4th in Belhaven, NC. Ms Neva’s backyard was full of lawn chairs and tables full of food. Family, friends and neighbors came from all over to visit and share love and laughter !! Distance has become a much larger obstacle over the years, I am thankful to be able to keep in touch through Facebook.  Sending hugs and prayers with love.

I met Sam over 52 years ago, when Kathy & I with a few other girls went to a dance at March Air Force Base.  You could see that Sam & Kathy were attracted to each.  That evening lead to a lifelong Love Affair that lasted over 51 years and produced three wonderful children and grandchildren.  Sam had a beautiful smile and showed such kindness for everyone he met.  He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

I didn't even get two sentences in from Danielles message before I was crying.

 Over the years the love the Guthrie family has shown this kid just looking for a place to belong, I cannot even put into words.

I have loved this man like a second father, his passing will leave a huge hole in my heart. I am absolutely heartbroken.

Guardian of the Block

My brother Al and I moved to the house across the street in February of 2015.  We we're warmly welcomed by Kathie and the rest of the surrounding neighbors on our moving day.  Sam was a bit more reserved and had more of a wait and see what these guys are about approach.  It was immediately  obvious to us that Sam was here to protect all of us neighbors that lived on the block. The first few months consisted of waves of hi and bye.  Then one day we began chatting about sports and cars and that was the beginning of many more conversations about so many different topics. Sam always made time to walk across the street and share a conversation or be willing to provide help when needed. 

Sam will forever be the guardian of the block and will continue to watch over us.

Wow, i can’t believe he’s gone. He was a staple on our street. We always know when Sam came and went by hearing his truck. My son Jeremiah  looked at Sam as a grandpa. He always stopped or waved whenever he seen us. We met Sam 18 years ago when we moved on the same street. And he would do anything for us. My heart broke Monday when i heard the news. Sam you will be Greatly missed. Love The Hollands

Freddie became our " other brother" the moment he came to live with us. We all worked together on our farm milking cows and shoveling manure. He and I would have pancake eating contests and always had something going on. He was a little crazy so he fitted right in with our family. I didn't get to see him much when he moved out west but I still loved him and his family and will miss him very much. You are all in my prayers and know God will give you comfort. Remember the good times!

I was just a little fellow but some of my greatest memories are the Guthrie family reunion on the 4th of July in Belhaven NC. I still remember the first time Uncle Freddie,Aunt Kathy pulled up in front of Grandma Guthrie’s house and opened the camper doors and out came Scott,Kevin and Danielle.Then the fun began running and playing and asking could we go up town.It’s the biggest day in our two stop light town with all the family and food parade and fireworks.Love you’ll with all my heart from your East coast family

You are my first love, my hero, my everything. You are the best daddy and grandfather anyone could ask for. I am blessed for the time I had with you and all the things you've taught me in this life. I will hold tight the memories of you being the most loving, humble, caring and giving person. You did one heck of a great job raising us into who we are today.  Our kids will raise their kids the way you raised us because of you. I miss you beyond measure daddy. I wish I had just 5 more minutes with you to tell you I love you and give you one last hug so you could tell me what you always told me "it will be alright Bitty".

I met Sam in 1975 when I was only 17. He mentored me in so many ways. He gave me lots of sound advice... usually in very subtle ways. I don't think he knew the impact he had on my life. Sam and Kathy kept me from going off the deep end in my teenage years. Sam was a genuine true friend... The best anyone could ever ask for. I could never list all the things he did for me.  Sam had a heart of Gold! We had some good talks. Sam loved Kathy. He loved his kids and grandkids. He cared about his friends. We talked about God and some of the things we didn't understand about God, but God loves us. I believe he's with God now.  We love you too Sam!!!!!

From the first time we met , he treated me as his sister.  Always had a joke for me and a smile.  I love you Freddie !!!
