January 30, 2020. Laverne was born on October 27, 1939 in Sudan, TX
to Elmer and Marie Amick. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law,
Julie and Scott Schulze; daughter, Lori Keith; granddaughters,
Amy Rissinger, Emily Sopkin and husband Max; mother, Marie Amick; and
brothers, Roy Amick (wife Carole), and Steve Amick (wife Beverley). She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack and father, Elmer.
Laverne, as a toddler, moved with her family from Texas to Los Angeles, CA.
Eventually, the family relocated to Ontario, CA where she remained a lifelong resident. She attended local elementary school, junior high school, and graduated
from Chaffey High School in 1957. After high school, Laverne and Jack were married and purchased their one and only home in Ontario. They were married for 55 years before Jack’s passing in 2013.
Prior to starting her family, Laverne worked at Vince’s Spaghetti Restaurant in Ontario, CA; followed by Bank of America in Upland, CA. After the birth of her first daughter, Julie, in 1960, then second daughter, Lori, in 1961, she chose to remain at home and devote herself to being a wife and mother. As her daughters grew, Laverne eventually rejoined the workforce and accepted a position with Bank of America in Claremont, CA. In subsequent years, she went on to work for Teall & Associates performing marketing research. Life’s events eventually led Laverne to ten years of fulltime caregiving for her husband, Jack, after his debilitating stroke in 2003, followed in recent years by fulltime caregiving for her beloved elderly mother.
In later years, the title Laverne wore most proudly was that of “Grandma” to Amy and Emily. She attended all their events with her camera in hand to capture every special moment and remained very devoted to her daughters and granddaughters. One of her greatest passions was baking pies, not just one but several at a time which she brought to all family dinners. Besides doting on her family, she loved to shop and frequented “Ross” and “Macy’s” department stores on a weekly basis. She was an active member at Shirlee’s Fitness Club enjoying water aerobics and time with friends. She was also a member of Upland Traveler’s and enjoyed attending productions at Candlelight Pavilion in Claremont, CA.
