

Leon Gilbert Howard, Sr. was born to Lorenza and Odalee Green Howard in Los Angeles, California. From an early age, Leon demonstrated a joyful spirit and a love for life that would stay with him throughout his years. In 1961, Leon accepted Christ and was baptized at Sweet Home Baptist Church in Los Angeles under the leadership of Rev. Oz Brown—a milestone that marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith.
Leon received his early education at Grape Street and 111th Street Elementary Schools, continued at David Starr Jordan Junior High School, and graduated from Manual Arts High School in 1967. He went on to attend Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, where he studied Drafting and nurtured a strong interest in design and creativity.
Over the years, Leon built a diverse and meaningful career, working with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the City of Los Angeles, and Marten Trucking Company. He was a hardworking, dedicated individual who took pride in all he did. Leon was a man of many passions and talents. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, he often had friends and family in stitches, earning a reputation as the unofficial comedian of every gathering. He loved cooking and was known for bringing people together with his delicious meals. A true DIY enthusiast, Leon had a gift for building, fixing, and creating—he was remarkably crafty and inventive.
A lover of jazz music, Leon found peace and inspiration in its rhythm and soul. He was also an avid fan of cowboy movies, often spending time watching his favorite Westerns. He had a sharp sense of fashion and enjoyed shopping, always stepping out in style. One of his favorite pastimes was rolling dice in Las Vegas, and he had a special place in his heart for his cherished 1956 Ford pickup truck.
In 1975, Leon met and married Debra Jones Howard. Together, they built a life filled with love and family, raising children who were the pride of his life.
Leon was called home to be with the Lord at the age of 76 years old, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, love, and creativity. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Maude Peace Denman; his parents, Lorenza and Odalee Howard; his sister Wylene; and his brother Elvin “Butch.” He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Shirley Robinson; his four children, Leon Jr., Rashii, Chad Sr., and Randall (Joseph); five grandchildren, Dominique, Chad Jr., Zoie, Riley, and Raegan; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
From the depths of our hearts, Leon will be forever missed but never forgotten. His vibrant spirit, warm laughter, and boundless creativity will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
