He was born on September 5, 1945, in Mansfield, Ohio, and joined the US Army shortly after graduation. He was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the Army Special Forces. Gary was a skilled construction professional who owned and managed his business, Vanderbilt Custom Homes. He was also formerly a manager of Sun Finance and was a property manager for several housing units throughout the years.
Gary was an avid car enthusiast and enjoyed building, driving and displaying his cars at various shows. He enjoyed watching movies, riding motorcycles, and had a special place in his heart for animals of all kinds.
Gary is survived by his wife of over 56 years, Barbara Hoffman Vanderbilt; three children, Eric (Jaimee) Vanderbilt, April (Keith) Travis and Craig (Cindy) Vanderbilt; five grandchildren, Tristan (Talia) Vanderbilt, Alec Vanderbilt, Addison Vanderbilt, Vivian Vanderbilt, and John Travis; two great-grandchildren, Levi and Augustin; a sister, Cindy (Rob) McClaran; a brother, Kenneth Vanderbilt; and many cousins and friends who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Robert and Alma Vanderbilt; a sister, Janice McCammon; and a brother, Rick Vanderbilt.
A memorial service will be held at a future date. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with military honors in Lexington Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice. Wappner Funeral Directors-Ontario is honored to serve the family.
