Paul E. Haycook, 88, of Mansfield, Ohio peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Mansfield on February 17, 1935 to the late Paul O. Haycook and Elizabeth M. Harris.
Paul worked at Ohio Edison for 40 years as an electrician, retiring in March of 1994. He spent his retirement days doing what he loved. Woodworking was a gift he had, a perfectionist at measuring and numbers for building anything from decks, furniture to small pieces. His most favorite craft was making reindeer for Christmas that held gifts. He made sure each one of the kids in the family had one to put under the tree. Paul enjoyed fishing with his son on the boat, camping, and loved a fire to sit around. He also enjoyed spending many years talking with friends over coffee at McDonalds every morning.
Paul was an avid weightlifter, bench pressing 500lbs at 60 years old. He was dedicated to working out every day at the YMCA of Mansfield for many years. Then later in life he found his sweet tooth and never turned down anything his wife or anyone else would bake. He would say” there is always room for dessert.”
Paul had a green thumb as well. He always had an abundance of color in his flower beds that both he and his wife, Maxine, had spent many hours in every year. Paul also made sure he had a perfect cut, plush, green lawn. Not a dandelion to be found.
Paul traveled with his wife, Maxine, to many of the states sharing and creating many memories with their family. Driving out west was his favorite and making sure he took a different route home to ensure he seen all the beautiful things God created. He would sit with a map and route his destination prior; always being prepared.
Paul was strong and determined. He battled end stage kidney disease for many years doing dialysis three days each week. He was the most loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather.
He is survived by his son, David (Rose) Haycook; grandchildren, Tara (Lief) Hartley, Cathy Haycook, Michael (Angie) Ray and Angie (Shane) Patrick; great-grandchildren, Briana Brauchler (Nick), Brooklyn Wright (Nathan), Christina (Kevin) Sisak, Kristin Burton (Matt), Victoria (K) Howard, Emily (Matt) Gibson, and David Ray; great-great grandchildren, Hudson, Kennedy, Hunter, Hayden, Denali, Adaline, Owen and Leo; and many, many, others that called him grandpa over all the years he had adopted as grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maxine Haycook; and brothers, Ronnie Haycook and Richard Haycook.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Wappner Funeral Directors – Ontario, 100 Lexington-Springmill Rd. S., Ontario, Ohio 44906. A service will follow beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Brian Phillips. He will be laid to rest in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to New Beginnings Freewill Baptist Church, 2375 Stiving Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44903.
