Dorothy Caroline Schulz Niesen, 91, passed away on September 12, 2019 in Orange City, Florida. Dorothy was born on July 9, 1928 in Wilkinsburg, PA and graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1946. She married her high school sweetheart James “Jim” Niesen on October 29, 1948 and they were blessed with two daughters. Dorothy loved being a mom and adored raising her daughters. They moved from Pennsylvania to Jacksonville, FL in 1966 and then to Atlanta, GA in 1976. When Jim retired in 1988, they built a house in Cartersville, GA and eventually in 2004 they moved to Florida to be closer to their daughters.
Dorothy loved the Lord, loved her family, and loved people. She spent her life serving others through her church and in her community. She was a faithful and reliable friend. She considered her greatest accomplishment in life to be her role as mother and later, grandmother. She doted on her two daughters, trying to give them the best childhood she could, and later she did the same with her grandchildren. She was always willing to sacrifice for her family without complaint, and took great pleasure in blessing them when she could. She was a talented artist and dabbled in a wide variety of mediums, from painting to stained glass to sewing. She appreciated the beauty of the world around her and enjoyed sharing that with others. She delighted in learning, always seeking to expand her knowledge and understanding of many different topics. She read countless books and enjoyed sharing that passion with her grandkids and great grandkids. She also loved to travel, visiting almost every state and many countries.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, and an infant daughter. She will be sorely missed by her family who survives her: brother Richard Schulz and wife Garnet in Pittsburgh, PA; two daughters Marilyn St. Johns and partner Richard Prout of Osprey, FL and Susan Peck and husband Andy of Debary, FL; three grandchildren: Ashley Borrego (Paul), Andrew Peck Jr. (Molly), and Amy Peck; and five great-grandchildren: Savannah Borrego, Drew Peck, Caroline Borrego, Elizabeth Borrego, and Sadie Peck.
A private memorial service will be held on September 21, 2019 and she will be inurned at Deltona Memorial Gardens in Orange City, FL. In lieu of flowers and in remembrance of Dorothy’s love of owls, donations can be made to the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, Florida (https://cbop.audubon.org/).
