Fred Weahl Cooley Jr.

Coach Fred Cooley played his final ballgame on June 11, 2026, at the remarkable age of 97 years. Born in Tennessee on August 20, 1928, Fred lived a life marked by faith, family, service, and a deep love for teaching and mentoring young people through athletics.

Known simply as “Coach” to generations of students, athletes, fellow coaches, and friends, Fred dedicated much of his life to shaping young lives on and off the football field. His passion for coaching, leadership, and encouragement left a lasting impact on countless players throughout his career. He loved working with young athletes and took great pride in helping them grow into successful adults.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Margaret Cooley; his daughters, Janet McDonald, Susan Harris, Ginger Bruce, and Freida Cid (Andy); his bonus children, Amy Wetmore (Rick) and Troy Bowman (Kari); his grandchildren, Andrew, Tricia, Gini, Logan, Scott and Nick; his bonus grandchildren, Jimbo, Shannon, and Michael; thirteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, former players, and coaching colleagues who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Cooley Sr. and Martha Cooley; his first wife, Anna Marie Cooley; his brothers, Sim, Preston, and John; his sister, Bess; his granddaughter, Crystal; and his sons-in-law, Jim and Shane.

A man of strong Christian faith, Coach Fred fought the good fight and kept his faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ. He pressed forward toward Heaven to receive his eternal reward and now rests in the loving arms of Christ. His life was a testament to perseverance, humility, kindness, and devotion to those he loved.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of DeBary, 32 South Shell Road, DeBary, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church for a special project.
