Joan B Monroe

June 11, 1933 - September 9th, 2026

Joan Bailey Monroe passed away peacefully on September 9th, 2026, in Centre, AL with her daughter, Debbie & son-in-law, Mike Purdy by her side in their home at the age of 93. She was born in Daytona Beach, Florida on June 11, 1933. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Matthew Bailey & Elma Lee (Smith) Forbes. A sister Roberta Evelyn & brother-in-law, Jack Evelyn. Along with Bill Allgood, Matt Yoder, Jim Monroe, & Larry Smith. Also, her grandsons, Carson Allgood & Ellito (Elliot) Sebastian Correa.

Joan is survived by her 3 children: Debbie Allgood Purdy (Mike), Mitzi Allgood Correa, & Matt Allgood. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Shane Purdy, (Felicia), Ben Purdy (Jamie), Jeremy Purdy (Beth), Sasha Correa, Stephanie Allgood, & Audrey Allgood along with her great-grandchildren, Isaac, McCord, Sawyer, Jalyn, Jayci, Jansyn, Jerzy, McKinley, Lincoln Purdy, Winston Pshenishny, & Wallace Allgood Briggs. Along with her beloved cousin for 94 years, Marilyn Bailey Horsch. Joan also is survived by her extended family, grandchildren, & great-grandchildren through the Yoder, Monroe, & Smith families, whom she very much loved.

Joan graduated from Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Georgia. Joan’s first job was a librarian where she was living in Toledo, OH & then went on to college for some years. She worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company for many years in Georgia & Michigan.

Co-owner & manager of the Tee Pee in Petoskey, Michigan & went on to manage Stuckey Stores in Indiana. She then received her Real Estate License which led her to becoming a manager & realtor of condominiums in the Florida Keys & in Coconut Grove, Florida. Then she later retired to reside in Deltona, Florida. The same home after renovating where her mother & grandmother previously lived.

Joan was a devoted mother who was a leader in the Blue Birds & Brownies Group. She loved to volunteer at her children’s schools as their room mother & had the coolest parties! She believed in her children to be successful & encouraged them to do their best.

Joan has been a member of Deltona Alliance Church, Deltona, FL for 33 years. She attended some before joining where she would bring her grandsons. Her grandsons made the comment of the pastor, who at the time, reminded them of their father’s preaching & she knew that church is where she would want to join & serve.

During that time, she became a loving servant in various positions, volunteering in Vacation Bible School, teaching a ladies’ Bible Study, being trained to be an Evangelism Explosion trainer where she led countless lives to the Lord. She would pick up missionaries at the airport for the church & baked when needed. She was known as a prayer warrior. Following one of Joan’s macular hole surgeries, she had to keep her head down all day & night. She would ask Debbie to read out her prayer list & Joan would pray for everyone every day. If she saw someone from her church in a grocery store aisle & they would request prayer, mother stopped & would pray over that person in the middle of the aisle. She would also be found praying with various people at her church. She was also known to give ‘holy hugs.’

She was involved in all the ladies’ ministries. After Bible Study, her friends went to the Pizza Hut every week. When they walked into the restaurant, the waitress would say, I will put in your order. Joan, along with some other ladies from the church, enjoyed playing Rook every week together. They loved going out to eat together after church on Sunday. They also made many road trips together with her being their driver.

Joan is especially known for sending cards to all her family, various churches’ friends, & the Senior Adult Center of Volusia County. She was recognized last year on her 92nd birthday in person by Mayor Santiago Avila, Jr of Deltona, FL who recognized the milestones reflecting upon the many chapters in her life’s journey and the people her life has touched.

She has been attending New Hope South Baptist Church, Lyerly, GA in this last year.

Our family is especially thankful for our Hospice Team for their loving care, support, listening ears, & providing medical needs for our mother. A special thank you to Joan’s nurse, Casey Beck for her love, care, & support for our mother along with nurses, Glenda & Amanda, along with the Hospice aide, Carmella Robinson who was so good to Joan.

There will be a graveside service at Deltona Memorial Gardens, Deltona, FL on September 20th at 2:00 pm.

Pallbearers: Shane Purdy, Ben Purdy, Jeremy Purdy, Isaac Purdy, Douglas Nelson, & Jarid McGlothern.

Dr. Mike Purdy, her son-in-law, will officiate the services.
