

He was born on April 5, 1943 in Santurce, Puerto Rico, a son to the late Bernardo and Herminia Ortiz Espada Mercado. In 1968, Jose was honorably discharged from service in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. In 1970 he moved to Rochester, New York. Jose had many work endeavors but he was most accomplished as a Chef. Over his years he enjoyed bicycling, singing, western movies, even though he will be most remembered for his joking with family and friends.
Jose is survived by a son, Jose B. Mercado, Jr.; three daughters, Olga N., Leilani, and Leslie Mercado; two brothers, Eligio and Angel; five sisters, Carmen, Aida, Tita, Maria, Margarita; twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; and his special pet parrot, LoLo.
In addition to his parents, Jose was preceded in death by a brother, Pedro and a sister, Lourdes.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Deltona Memorial Funeral Home; 1295 Saxon Blvd., Orange City, Florida with Pastor Juan Carlos Molina officiating.
