Lawrence James Smiley, age 68, of Deltona, Florida, passed away on August 23, 2025. He was born in Lake Helen, Florida, on June 7, 1957, and proudly graduated from Deland High School. Lawrence married Anita Smiley on November 9, 1991, and the two built a life together filled with love, loyalty, and laughter.
Lawrence dedicated his career to maintenance, serving at Florida Hospital / Fish Memorial and later at Good Samaritan Society. He possessed a practical, hands-on spirit and a knack for fixing things, often turning a daunting repair into a moment of lighthearted camaraderie. His work ethic, kindness, and willingness to help others touched many lives.
A man of many passions, Lawrence enjoyed camping, travel, BBQ, and fishing. He found joy in the simple pleasures—sharing a meal with family, exploring the outdoors, and teaching those around him how to see the beauty in everyday moments. He loved his family deeply and found pride in the achievements of his children and grandchildren.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Anita Smiley; his children, Sondra (Nic) Lovett, Natasha (Shane) Smiley, Chanelle (Gerald) Taylor, and Lawrence (JoElly) Smiley Jr.; his grandchildren, Samia, Samuel, Samarion, Sacori, Saviour Green, Alana Stephens, and Ferris Lovett; and his siblings, Gene Smiley, Carnet Smiley, Vernice Swint, and Opelia Johnson. He was cherished by many nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues who remember him for his warmth, steadfastness, and generous spirit.
A memorial service to celebrate Lawrence’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations honor of Lawrence’s memory to a charity of your choice that supports families in need or outdoor recreation programs, reflecting the passions that brought him joy.
Lawrence James Smiley will be missed by all who knew him, and his legacy of love, service, and practical wisdom will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
