Leyda Lemos

March 30, 1937March 20, 2020

Leyda Lemos, 82 of Deltona, Florida, died on Saturday, March 20, 2020 at Halifax Hospice Care Center in Orange City, Florida. Born in Buga-Valle, Colombia, Leyda came to the United States with $27 in her purse, her newly minted green card, and the determination to find work in order to provide for her two sons in Colombia. Leyda quickly found employment in New York's Garment District where she made her mark by demonstrating her skills on the sewing machine and her keen attention to detail. Leyda also met the man that would become her husband for 30 years, Gustavo Lemos. They had a daughter who was born in Bronx, N.Y., Yeyda Dorothy Lemos-Klinkert. Leyda and Gustavo retired to Deltona, Florida in 1990. During her retirement years, Leyda enjoyed the Florida weather, cooking for her family and friends, sewing, crocheting, reading, and working on word search puzzles. Leyda is predeceased by her husband Gustavo, who died in November 2001. Leyda never remarried and insisted on maintaining her independence by living on her own until the illness got the best of her. Leyda leaves behind three children: Rodrigo Arango A., Hoyber Moreno A., both of Buga-Valle, Colombia and Yeyda D. Lemos-Klinkert of Deltona, Florida. Leyda also had three grandchildren: Rodrigo A. Arango P., Valeria Arango J., and Gustavo E. Moreno. The family will hold a private service as that was Leyda’s wish. At a later time, a celebration of life will be planned to honor the memory of this wonderful woman who we were lucky enough to call, “Mami”.

Yeyda, your Mom was such a huge part of all of your gatherings I always thought of her as our Mom too! While I always tried to have conversations with her in Spanish, I knew I was destroying the language. She never laughed at me and only encouraged me to practice more! She had such a kind and caring energy, I always gravitated towards her and always wanted to give her hugs! Bill and I are so sorry for your loss! She was a beautiful soul and raised caring, fun and wonderful children! Our love to all of your family during this difficult time!

Love, Amy & Bill

We will remember Layda as a loving and caring person who always had a smile to help others, also a great pleasure to be around her. More than a family, Layda worked for few years with my mother and they become very good friends. May memories of your Mom and the love of family surround you and give you strength in the days ahead. Love Always, Gioconda & Emilio ( Miami Florida)

I enjoyed my time or two meeting this sweet individual. As a friend of Yeyda, I know how important her mom was to her, so my thoughts and prayers go out to all of Leyda’s family and friends.

Sincerely,

My favorite memories of Leyda not surprisingly revolve around food. Of course the food was spectacular, but it was always more than just the food. The food was a reflection of her warmth and her way of making you feel like your were part of her family. From Walking Stick to the habanero incident to getting my son addicted to cheese bread, I am forever grateful to have been able to spend time with such an amazing lady.

To the Lemos and Lemos-Klinkert families, our deepest condolences.
