Samuel Winslow Bridgeman was born to Timothy and Nita Bridgeman on May 4th, 1947 at Station Hill, St. Michael, Barbados. He was home-born for that was the custom of the day. Also, Winslow, as he preferred to be called, was the first of seven children born to our parents.
At the age of four, Winslow began his schooling at Mayers private school which was located near the District A police station. Later, he attended St. Stephen’s and Welches Mixed schools, prior to commencing high school at the Modern under Louis Lynch’s tutelage.
After graduation from the Modern High School, Winslow taught at his alma mater for a couple of years prior to emigrating with his family to Brooklyn, NY in 1968. He continued his thirst for higher education by enrolling as a night student in the Associate’s degree program in Applied Sciences at the then New York City Community College. He worked at the American Kennel Club during this time.
Upon graduating from NYCCC, Winslow transferred to historic Howard University located in the nation’s capital, in the early 1970s. Our cousins Keith and Roy Neblett who were students there at the time, were instrumental in encouraging him to attend Howard in order to complete the Baccalaureate program in Science.
Always possessing a travel bug along with the desire for study, Winslow moved to the Mexican city of Guadalajara to commence medical studies at a local university. During this period and for the rest of his life until he became ill, Winslow travelled extensively throughout Central and South America.
During the early 2000s, Winslow settled in Stonybrook, LI, NY, completing his studies at the university there bearing the same name. Also, he worked in the university’s lab department as a Chemist.
Winslow relocated to Deltona in 2014 to be with mom and dad. Soon after, it was discovered that he had contracted the deadly disease of prostate cancer to which he succumbed on Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021. He is survived by his parents, six siblings, family members and many friends.
