Amabel was born in the hills Saint James, Jamaica. She left Jamaica as a 20 year old to make a life in the United States; then married; had four children and went on to get a Masters in Early Childhood Education.
She loved preschoolers and as a teacher started at that level, but then would eventually become a college professor at Bank Street College; Cuny, Suny.
She also served as the New York State Supervisor for foster care; private and group homes during the drug epidemic of the 80's. The last job she held before retiring was with the Salvation Army as administrator of the Foster Care Services in New York.
Preceded in death by two sons: Colin and David. Survived by eldest son, Ian McKay; daughter Patricia McKay. Grandsons: Michael and Joseph.
