Avie was born in Brunswick, Georgia and later moved to Jacksonville, FL. She began her career at Prudential Insurance. She was asked out on a blind date to see an Elvis movie at the Florida Theatre and met the love of her life, Donald. They were married on May 3, 1958 and would have celebrated their 66 wedding anniversary this year.
At an early age, Avie learned to crochet from her mother. This talent would leave its mark on many lives. For decades, loved ones, family and friends have cherished her love through beautiful afghans, blankets, scarves, angels and crosses.
Avie always wanted to give back too. Multiple times throughout the years she would take her crochet items to St. Vincent's Hospital to donate them for new born babies, children with cancer, unwed mothers and breast cancer patients. Her crochet was a gift of love and Avie insisted on being anonymous and never wanted recognition.
Many in the Ortega Community know Avie for her home daycare. Families and children stayed in touch over the years.
She was predeceased by her parents: Hugh Buford Horton and Lottie Mae Bostock and her son, Thomas Poleski Sr.
Avie is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Donald Poleski; son, Mark Poleski and his wife, Terre; daughter-in-law, Amanda Poleski; sister, Mary Sweet and her husband, Randy; 2 grandsons: Thomas Poleski Jr and his wife, Ali, who are expecting in June the first great-granddaughter, Sophie Poleski; Jonathan Poleski and his fiance, Maritza; and host of extended family and friends.
A Celebration of her life Mass will be held 1 PM, Saturday, March 9, 2024 at St. Matthews Church, 1773 Blanding Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32210.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Matthews Church in her honor.
