Michael Dean McConnell, 80 of Orange Park passed away on August 18, 2024. He was born In Fairfield, Iowa on June 26, 1944 to the late Hollisdeane (Rodgers) and Edgar McConnell. Soon after high school he joined the Navy. He proudly served his country for 24 years and began his lifelong love of aviation, combustion engines, and all hobbies that are fast. He was a member of the VP-45 Squadron in Jacksonville Naval Air Station and retired as an E-6. During his tour of duty he was involved in the VP-9 and VP-44 Units. Michael was lovingly known as “NASCAR Mike”. He also retired from St. Augustine Speedway as their first Official Flagman. Michael also was a reporter for the Clay County Leader and was the first to report Kenny Bernstein breaking the 300 m.p.h. at the NHRA Motorcraft Gatornationals in 1992. In his spare time he enjoyed rebuilding engines and watch all types of racing with his family.
Michael is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years Jean (Suits) McConnell, children; John McConnell (Debbie) and Michelle McConnell, grandchildren; Sean McConnell, James McConnell, Jr. (Kristina), Connor McConnell, Libby Rose McConnell, Keelin Terry and Hanna Shay Terry and favorite great grandchild, Amabel Kasonic. He was met in Heaven by his parents and children; James McConnell and Mary Elizabeth McConnell. Michael loved his family and was a tender and kind man.
A Interment at the Jacksonville National Cemetery will be held at Friday, September 27, 2024 at 2:00 pm (Lane 1). In lieu of flowers please make a donation to American Heart Association or a favorite charity of your choice.
