I never met Nic personally, I did work with his mother however. My heart knows that Nic was a very special and loved young man.. I feel that Angels are singing along with him and his music..

Back in the earlier Mavericks days, there was usually a head sort of floating above the whole crowd. That head ALWAYS had a big smile on it. That smile will be missed!

Pace... My thoughts are with you, Brother.

The hardest thing to do is to have to cope with the loss of a child. May god give you the strength to cope with that loss. All my prayers to the family and friends in this most difficult time in your lives.

To the family and friends of Nic, I am so very sorry for your loss. I am still in shock over hearing about this. I met Nic in 2006. We were neighbors in Ocean Beach. I look back on those times fondly. Hanging out in the back yard, throwing horse shoes, talking, listening to Nic play the guitar.

A couple of years later, while I was trying to get into grad school, Nic opened up his tiny one-bedroom apartment to me. We remained roommates until he moved back to Florida. In fact, he sold me his really sweet Robert August long board. I tried to talk him out of it, but he insisted. He didn't want to drive all the way to Florida with it.

I spoke with him about 3 years ago, while I was in grad school. He'd told me about his schooling. I was very happy for him and knew that he was going to do big things.

I really miss his laugh. It was loud, sincere, and infectious.

I've known lots of good people and lots of bad people. Nic was one of the best. The world is truly a darker place without him.

My sincerest condolences go out to you. I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers as you lay your beloved son to rest.

The light in his eyes and joy in his smile... When Nic talked about his mom, the light in his eyes and joy in his smile were brilliant, you could feel it. When Nic talked about his sister Sloane, Juju, Brian, Ging, Poppa, or Bryce, the light in his eyes and joy in his smile were palpable in the room. When he talked about surfing, camping, or going out with his friends, the light in his eyes and the joy in his smile made you happy. When he talked about bringing up the grade of a young boy needing help in math, the light in his eyes and joy in his smile made you proud just to be close to him. When he said "Hey Miss Cheryl" and bent down to hug me, the light in his eyes and joy in his smile made me feel like that's exactly where I was supposed to be; with his family who all greet everyone this way. But to say I won't miss his light and joy until I hear "Hey Miss Cheryl" again would be a lie. Nic had lots of quotes in his room, some really deep and some way above my head; one I read on a church sign reminds me of Nic and what we should do to honor his short life "aspire to inspire before you expire..." then we will see the light in his eyes and the joy in his smile.
