Doris Saunders Cater was a very special lady and loved by all who knew her. She passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011, just two days before her 83 birthday, of natural causes. Doris was born in High Point, North Carolina to Flossie and William Saunders and moved to Orlando, Florida in 1953. She was married to William Benjamin (Ben) Cater who preceded her in death in 1987. She worked as the bookkeeper for George Stuart Inc. for over 40 years. Even before the day of computers and spreadsheets, she took pride in balancing every account to the penny.Never having children of her own, she became very close to the six children of Vicki and George Stuart. She looked after them and their families as much as they looked after her.A long-time member of the Powers Drive Baptist Church, Doris was a devoted Christian and attended twice a week services regularly until illness kept her away during the last month of her life. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed their monthly outings. She had many wonderful friends from her neighborhood, church and community. She was an “over comer”…she had survived many battles with various serious illnesses throughout her life and yet kept a positive outlook and optimism that was remarkable. Since Ben's death, Doris lived alone and was very independent. Her constant companion was her beloved Maltese, “Precious.” She loved angels and used angelic decorations throughout her home. She loved to grow African Violets, read three or four books at a time, and made many heirloom cross-stitch tablecloths and bedspreads. Doris always dressed beautifully and had a particular affection for earrings and shoes. Her hair was always coiffured exquisitely whether she was going to the grocery or to church.A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 5, at 11am at Powers Drive Baptist Church, 3311 N. Powers Drive, Orlando, FL 32818. Visitation will begin at the church at 10am. Entombment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Gotha, FL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Vie Glenn Missionary Group at the Powers Drive Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Chapel/Carey Hand, Orlando, FL.
