Freeman was raised in Canada where he met his high school sweetheart Margaret. After serving in the Canadian Navy Freeman and Margaret were married at the age of 21. Shortly after being married they moved to Detroit where Freeman attended the Ford Motor Company Trade School. After completing school Freeman decided that sitting in an office all day was not how he wanted to spend his work day, so he quit that line of work and went into the outdoor home improvement business. At the age of 43 Freeman decided it was time for a change from the harsh winters of cold and not being able to work outdoors and the summers of working from sun up to sun down. Having visited Orlando through the years to see Margaret’s sister Betty he decided that was where he was taking his family. Freeman was introduced to the Viegle family through Betty’s son and learned about the new Beefy King concept. Having never had any food industry experience he was intrigued by the idea and decided that was the direction he was taking his future. Fifty years have passed and thanks to his dedication and work ethic Beefy King is now a Central Florida institution. Freeman took an interest in flying and decided to get his pilot’s license and Margaret was not to be left behind so they both obtained their instrument rated, twin engine certification. Throughout their flying career they owned 8 airplanes and flew numerous journeys covering the U.S., Mexico, Caribbean and Canada. After retiring from the daily operation of Beefy King Freeman and Margaret pursued their love of the outdoors through fishing and golfing. In the 90’s Freeman and Margaret moved to a golf community in Lakeland where they enjoyed new friends and adventures. In 2010 Margaret passed and Freeman moved back to Orlando to be with family and once again become involved with Beefy King. Up until the day of his passing at age 93 he would go into the restaurant every morning at 6:00am for the morning prep work.
Freeman will be remembered for his dedication to his family and friends. He touched many people throughout his life with kindness, love and an amazing Smile that will always be remembered.
A memorial service will be held August 25th, 2018 at 11:00am at Baldwin-Fairchild Conway Funeral Home 1413 S Semoran Blvd. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to russellhome.org
