John McKenney Leavitt III

John was born to Juliet (Boyd) and John Leavitt II in New Orleans on August 22, 1945. He grew up in Mountain View, GA and was graduated from Forest Park High School. He went on to join the US Navy from 1963-1973 where he served on the USS Power, USS Tweedy, and USS English.

After being discharged he met and wed the love of his life Kathy. To them two daughters were born, Michele and Jennifer. John was a devoted and loving family man, and in1981 the family made Orlando their home.

John was passionate about Veterans and Veterans causes and joined the American Legion where he found his calling. During his membership, he started Florida’s first Navy Club where he was a Commander for 2 years. He was instrumental in establishing the Legion Riders at Post 286, he was involved in Boys State Oratorical contest, and most notably he was a 9-time Post Commander of Post 286.

He was an eloquent speaker and riotous storyteller known for his honor, his fortitude, and his “ROLL TIDE”.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Juliet and John, as well as his stepfather John Bednarik. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Kathy, as well as his daughters Michele (Joe) Combee and Jennifer; Grandchildren Chris (Alecia) Leavitt, Reagen, Amanda, Josh, and Brenna; and Great Grandsons, Brantley, Jaiden, and Tucker John Leavitt; as well as his beloved in-laws and many neices and nephews.

A Celebration of life will be held Jan 9, 2027 from 1-3 pm at The American Legion Post 286.
