

Joy Julienne (Judy) Newman, Pickerill, Holsclaw, 94, of Celebration, Florida, passed away from chronic pneumonia September 18, 2010. Born November 29, 1915 in Valdosta, GA, to John and Willie Boyd Newman moving to the Orlando area in 1923. She was crowned Miss Sanford competing in the Miss Florida Contest of 1933. Judy owned Dixie Package Store until the 1966 death of her first husband Dick Pickerill. Judy married Ralph Holsclaw in 1967 who passed in 1979. At age 51 Judy obtained her LPN degree followed by working 23 years for Orlando Holiday Hospital/ORMC Ambulatory Center until her retirement in 1992 at the age of 76. In 1991 she was selected as ORMC LPN of the Year. Judy served seven non-consecutive terms as President of local LPN divisions and State LPN Association President 1991-2. Judy was nominated to Governor Bob Graham’s prestigious Florida Women’s Hall of Fame in 1986. She served eight years on the Advisory Council for Health Occupations Orange County Public Schools. Judy received the Bronze, Silver and Gold volunteer medallions from the American Heart Association. She served two terms as President of the Holiday Credit Union. Judy was a life long and a founding member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Orlando. She was an active member for many years of Toastmaster club #28. Ballroom dancing was her passion and physical therapy for her 1997 stroke up until just before her passing. Preceded by sisters Betty and Dolly, she is survived by her 101 year old brother John Newman; daughter Susan and son-in-law Rick Amick; son Richard Westmann and daughter-in-law Electra: step daughter Jean VanBrackle; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four nieces, and nine nephews. Viewing to be held from 6 to 8pm Friday, September 24, at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home 2811 Curry Ford Road, Orlando. Open Funeral Services will be held at 1pm Saturday, September 25 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2499 North Westmoreland Drive, Orlando officiated by The Rev. Roger J. Hamilton, followed by burial services at Greenwood Cemetery, 1603 Greenwood Street, Orlando.
