Roger Simmons, Jr., 92, of Orlando, passed away peacefully with family by his side at his home on Nov. 13, 2020. Roger was born in Gholson, Mississippi on May 17, 1928. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Minnie Belle Sellars Simmons and his younger brothers, Ralph and William, as well as his infant grandson, Ryan. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Joyce Webb Simmons, daughters Susan Forster (Bob) and Sharon Green, younger sister Carol Simmons Pait, grandchildren Brandon and Lauren Forster, sisters-in-law Nell Simmons and Jeane Bryan (Kenneth); nieces, nephews, great-nieces/nephews, and god-daughters Alecia and Dayna Rollins.
Roger attended Mississippi Southern University, class of 1947. As a World War II Marine Corps veteran, he specialized in aircraft mechanics. He continued his love of airplanes by building and collecting model airplanes throughout his life. He enjoyed sports and sports trivia, loved Florida State football, and was an avid fan of playing and watching golf. Throughout his life, Roger delighted in traveling through the 48 continental United States alongside Joyce and family and was proud to have cruised to Alaska and Hawaii to visit all 50 states. His outgoing spirit touched everyone he came in contact with; Roger was known to start a conversation by asking “Where are you from?”, “Have you seen snow?”, “Are you behaving yourself?” and was proud to inform them that “Grandpas don’t have to behave.”
Roger was a retired uniform salesman and a lifetime honorary member of the Florida Sheriff's Association. In his 30 years of service, he would travel all over Florida to various Sheriffs' offices and the family would accompany him in the summers. He also was employed by Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home as a Guest Associate for many years.
Roger and his family have been members of North Park Baptist Church in Orlando for over 60 years. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to please consider making a donation to their church, at 2047 Prospect Avenue, Orlando, Florida 32814.
