

Samuel B. Hopkins Jr., 92, of Orlando passed away June 25, 2010. Sam was born in Alabama in 1917 and relocated to Orlando after service in the Army during WWII. The owner of Hopkins Fuel Oil, Inc., Sam was active in the Central Florida community. Among his many accomplishments, Sam was a Past President of Kiwanis Club Orlando and a Deacon and an Elder for The First Presbyterian Church of Orlando. Sam was a life-long member and supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and was given the Silver Beaver Award for his service to Scouting. Sam was able to pursue his passion after retirement and became an avid naturalist and ecological consultant. Sam was a member of the Florida Native Plant Society and a frequent contributor to a Society newsletter.
Sam was a devoted husband and loving father. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Layton Hopkins, and his son Sam Hopkins III. He is survived by his son and his wife David and Candace Hopkins and their children Kathryn and James; his son Jeff Hopkins and his children Layton and Ariel.
Visitation will be held by the family Tuesday, July 6, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, 2811 Curry Ford Road, Orlando. Funeral Services will be held the following day, Wednesday, July 7, 2:00 p.m. at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home.
