William Eric Dewitt

With profound sadness, we share the passing of Colonel William “Bill” Eric DeWitt Sr. USAF, Retired, a devoted husband, loving father, and proud veteran, who departed this life peacefully on August 30, 2026, in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 86.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on November 12, 1939, Bill’s life was defined by integrity, service, and love for his family. In 1961, he answered the call to serve his country, beginning a distinguished career in the United States Air Force that spanned more than two decades. During the Vietnam War, Bill served with honor aboard the C-130 gunship Spectre 69, a role that demanded courage, precision, and unwavering dedication to his fellow airmen.

At the time of his retirement in 1981, Bill was serving as a navigator on the C-5A Galaxy and was stationed at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware — a position and place he remembered with great pride. He was also an active member of the Dover Masonic Lodge Orlando Eola Lodge and Bahia Shriners, continuing his commitment to service and community.

Bill was known not only for his steadfast character but also for his quick wit and love of joking around. He had a gift for bringing smiles to those around him, often lightening even the heaviest moments with humor and warmth. One of his favorite sayings was, “If you are going to fly with crows, you had better plan on getting shot at,” a reflection of both his sharp humor and his understanding of life’s challenges.

He was preceded in death by his cherished son, Eric; his sister Janice; and his brother Sammy. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary Belle; his son, Darren (Becky); his daughter, Kathryn; his brother Terry (Jennifer); his sister Dottie (Neil); and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren — each of whom will carry forward his wisdom, humor, and unwavering love.

Those who knew Bill will remember his steady presence, his compassionate heart, and the way he made people feel valued and at ease. His legacy is one of honor, laughter, and devotion — to his country, his family, and his friends.
