Arthur Podaras

Arthur was an admirer of the ancient Greek epic ‘The Odyssey,’ and in many ways, his own life was an odyssey too. Born on September 8, 1932, in Manchester, New Hampshire, to Nicholas and Stella Podaras, he was the youngest of seven children. He proudly served in the United States Navy as a weatherman during the Korean War while also playing basketball for the Navy team.

After earning his degree from the University of New Hampshire, Arthur followed his calling to teach. He spent 17 years teaching English at Billerica Memorial High School, where he became Chairman of the English Department and coached basketball. He was a dedicated teacher, mentor, and coach who left a lasting impact on countless students through his encouragement and belief in their potential.

Arthur embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. He enjoyed basketball, baseball, bowling, fishing, watersports, and especially golf, spending many years at Dennis Pines and Dennis Highlands golf courses, where he formed lasting friendships. In addition to sports, he had a lifelong love of music and was affectionately known as "The Music Man," rarely going anywhere without a favorite song playing.

Like every great odyssey, Arthur’s path was filled with unexpected turns, meaningful friendships, challenges overcome, and destinations reached. And though his earthly voyage has now reached its final stop, the legacy he leaves behind continues to inspire all who were fortunate enough to travel beside him.

Arthur is survived by his partner, Sarah Meselson; his daughters, Diane Podaras and Caitlin Podaras; his stepdaughter, Zoe Forbes; his grandchildren, Stephanie Thompson and Zachary Thompson; his great-granddaughter, Emily; and many beloved family members, friends, golf buddies, and former students.

In lieu of flowers, please go play a round of golf, visit the ocean, read a good book, or listen to your favorite music - and, as Arthur would say, "Be happy!"
