Barbara Grace, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 16. Born and raised in Manhasset, NY, on Long Island, Barbara grew up with a love of learning and a determination to carve her own path in the world. She attended Middlebury College, where she pursued studies in biology and French, becoming one of the few women of her generation to earn a college degree.
In the early years of her adulthood, Barbara operated a hotel on Cape Cod while raising her young children. Known for her impeccable manners and hospitality, she created a welcoming space that reflected her love of order, beauty, and the simple pleasures of life. After her children grew, Barbara felt called to new horizons and made a life-changing move to Florida. There, she found purpose in volunteer work, giving her time generously to causes that were close to her heart. She dedicated countless hours to an oceanic nonprofit, where she shared her love of the sea with children and adults eager to learn about Florida’s diverse marine habitats. Her compassionate spirit also extended to her work at a wound care center, a soup kitchen, and the Salvation Army, where she touched the lives of many with her kindness and dedication.
Later in life, Barbara returned to Cape Cod, where she spent her remaining years surrounded by the natural beauty she loved. She took great pleasure in gardening, always tending to her flowers and plants with care, and enjoyed many afternoons playing card games. She also found companionship and joy in her beloved cat, Gracie, who was always by her side. She cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who would brighten her days with their laughter.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Allen Grace; her brother, Richard Tracy; and her son, William Thayer. She is survived by her son Robert Thayer and his wife Kristine; her grandchildren, Michaela Smiley and her husband, Jonathan Thayer and his wife Lindsey, and Lyndsay Arute and her husband Paul; and six great-grandchildren, Ari, Maya, Luca, Jackson, Mason, and Charlie.
Barbara's family will honor her life privately. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army or to an oceanic nonprofit of choice in her memory.
