May 17, 1932 - December 8, 2021
A daughter of Ruby and Caleb Hill, mother of John and Caleb Carol passed away in the early afternoon of Wednesday, December 8 at Cape Cod Hospital.
Carol was a graduate of Summit High School (Class of 1950) and the Columbia University Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing (Class of 1953). She married John F R Smilgin III in 1957 and had two children, John F R Smilgin IV (b. 1960) and Caleb Hill Smilgin (b. 1962).
Carol was a nurse from the time she graduated Columbia University Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1953 until she married in 1957. After raising her two boys, she worked in the fashion industry in New York City for a number of years. Carol also worked for the Newmark Art Gallery, and Gallery 71 in NYC, and spent nearly 25 years working as Head of Building Services at the Spence School in New York."
She retired from Spence in 1998 and moved to Osterville, Massachusetts where she built her home on Falling Leaf Lane. Carol was many things in life: an author of three romance novels (Provenance, Love Was a Stranger and Concerto), an art collector, world traveler, gourmand, a musician, a noteworthy dancer, a lover of history and the environment, an animal lover (she was especially fond of cats, turtles, owls, crows, bats, camels and octopi).
Carol was very proud of her American heritage and was a Daughter of the American Revolution. Carol will be remembered as a wonderful friend, and a devoted mother. She is survived by her sons, John and Caleb, and her daughter in law, Christina. Carol was a vivacious, seraphic, free spirit who now awaits us patiently in the life eternal. A memorial service for Carol will be held at St. Andrews By The Sea in Hyannis Port at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18. A service is also planned for her family and friends in New York City sometime in June.
Please remember Carol in your prayers.
