“Charlie” was born in Port Chester NY and graduated from Port Chester High School. He received a degree in Business from Champlain College in Plattsburgh NY. Charlie proudly served his country for three years in the United States Coast Guard as a Radioman Second Class. It was in Plattsburgh that he met his beloved wife of 67 years, Linda Joan (Shinensky) Volker. They made their home in Port Chester with their two daughters, Beth F. Volker of Williston Vermont and Lori P. Gaygan of Valhalla NY. Charlie and Linda retired to Harwich Massachusetts 30 years ago where they had a very long and happy retirement. They spent 15 winters in Florida in their RV with whatever dog and cat they had at the time. Animals were an important part of their life together, having rescued and cared for at least ten cats, five dogs and any other critter who made its way into their home during their life together.
Charlie had a long career in sales, selling a variety of things from Volkswagons to insurance, where he spent the majority of his working life. His interests were many and varied. He loved fishing, boating, trap and skeet shooting and RV-ing around the country. He took tremendous pride in keeping both of his homes looking beautiful, always making sure that his yard and property were well groomed and perfectly landscaped. He was a loving husband and father with a great sense of humor and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Charlie was a member of the Masonic Order for more than 50 years, spending the majority of his time with the Masons at the Mamaro Lodge in Port Chester NY. He was also a volunteer fire fighter for 30 plus years with Brooksville Fire House also in Port Chester, and he was a member of the Orienta Gun Club in Mamaroneck NY.
Charlie’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff and caregivers at Maplewood at Brewster, as well as his other caregivers, Ginna Smyth from Bayada and Diana Gavoni.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, April 22nd at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way in Orleans. Internment will take place in May at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlie’s memory to the Humane Society of the United States at https://secure.humanesociety.org.
