Charles Thomas Wood of Brewster, MA has died at age 95 on Dec. 26, 2019. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He grew up and married in Worcester, MA. He leaves his wife of 72 years, Elinore who currently resides at Charles’ former nursing facility in Brewster.
Charles also leaves his son William and wife Patricia both of Worcester, his son Stephen of Providence, RI and his daughter Elizabeth and husband Peter Dodge from Jonesport, ME. He had four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Charles was born in Worcester April 1, 1924 to William and Kathryn (Healy) Wood. He was predeceased by his oldest brother William (Bill), his second brother John (Jack), his sister Doris (Wood) Wilson and his younger brother Edward (Eddie).
Charles was a printer by trade and worked at The Commonwealth Press and Heffernan Printing Companies in Worcester before moving to Cape Cod to ply the same trade at Thompson Printing in Orleans. He was active in the Board of Printing House Craftsmen serving as the Worcester Chapter and Cape Cod Chapter President.
He lived by the adage that most things in this world are designed to be accomplished by the average person with a little perseverance and ingenuity, and proved it by spending weekends in the 1960s building his home in Brewster. Not having any building experience, he worked out of books from the library and did all the carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, siding, roofing and finish work by himself. He even performed all the masonry for the foundation and chimney. With that kind of attitude, a lot of things captured his interest including gardening, bee keeping, wine making, and raising chickens.
He will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He and Elinore were active in the Brewster Historical Society where Charles was a Drummer Boy Windmill docent. They were also very active in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirt in Orleans. A memorial service will be held there in the Spring to celebrate his life.
Charlie’s family wants to thank the staff at the Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brewster for their caring professional care. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com.
