Born in Newark, New Jersey to Mary Dalton and William Fissell, Libby was a graduate of Trinity College in Washington DC. Libby was a loving wife, first to Lt. Thomas Casserly, who was a fighter pilot killed in Korea in 1952, and then from 1960 to 1975 as the devoted wife to William Griffin, who passed away after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Libby’s greatest joy and inspiration were her children, whom she is survived by: Susan Casserly Griffin from her first marriage and her daughters with Bill Griffin, Katherine Fissell Griffin, Peg Jatekar, Nancy Elizabeth Griffin and Trish Goslee, whom she raised in Bridgeport, CT.
In 1970, she and Bill discovered Cape Cod which became first her beloved refuge in summers, and then her permanent home in 1986. She cherished her friends here, and she was a permanent fixture at all the Orleans destinations, from the beautiful Nauset and Skaket Beaches, to the shops like Snow’s, The Christmas Tree Shop, Friends, The Land Ho, and the Post Office. She was a devoted parishioner at St. Joan of Arc church, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and a loyal volunteer at the St. Joan Thrift Shop.
Services to celebrate her life will be held at the Nickerson Funeral Home from 4-7PM on Monday, July 18th. A funeral mass will take place at St. Joan of Arc Church at 11AM Tuesday, July 19th. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Covenant House.
