Gene was born on January 10, 1962, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Paul White and Patricia White (Reed), both predeceased. Raised on Cape Cod and originally from Orleans, he graduated from Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in 1979 from the Plumbing Shop.
Following graduation, Gene enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, proudly serving his country for 21 years, including nearly seven years on active duty and 14 years in the Coast Guard Reserves. He attained the rank of Machinery Technician Third Class (MK3), E-4. During his service, he earned the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal (Second Award), the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon with “O” Device and Gold Star, and the Coast Guard Sea Service Ribbon. He proudly served aboard the Cutter Chase, his favorite assignment, and his time at sea remained a lasting source of pride.
After his military service, Gene worked at Shaw’s Supermarket for 28 years. He began in the deli before becoming the evening store manager. He took pride in his work and in being someone others could rely on. Over the years, he formed lasting relationships with customers and coworkers alike and was beloved by many in the community. He was still working at Shaw’s at the time of his passing.
Gene had a deep love for the outdoors and for the waters of Cape Cod. Much of his time on the water began at Sesuit Harbor, where he regularly launched his boat and tended his recreational lobster traps. He enjoyed scanning the sea floor with his sonar, searching for clusters of rock before carefully setting his traps. He found joy not only in the catch itself, but in sharing it with family and friends. Whether hauling traps or chasing tuna in Cape Cod Bay, he was drawn to the anticipation and challenge of being out on the water. He also loved fishing for stripers at night along Nauset Beach, appreciating the quiet and patience that came with casting into the dark surf.
During hunting season, Gene could often be found at his double tree stand near Great Swan in Harwich. He was both a bow hunter and a shotgun hunter, appreciating the patience and quiet focus the sport required. He liked to joke that he “caught more trees than deer” with his bow, a story he shared with characteristic humor.
Back home, Gene carried his love of good food into the kitchen. He enjoyed smoking meats, especially pork and brisket, and took pride in preparing meals that included his smoked meats, fresh fish, and the occasional venison stew. A favorite meal out was the pork chops at Mooncussers, which he always looked forward to.
Those who knew Gene knew he was many things at once: stubborn yet gentle, sarcastic yet thoughtful. He had a dry sense of humor, a generous heart, and a steady presence. He was very much a “go with the flow” kind of man, and little ever seemed to rattle him. He was also a light prankster who enjoyed stirring the pot now and then, often with a quiet grin. He carried himself with calm strength and showed his love through action more than words.
Above all, Gene valued family. There was nothing more important to him. He was a devoted father, and his children were his greatest pride.
He leaves behind his son, Michael White of Hyannis, and his daughter, Skyler White of Yarmouth Port. He is also survived by his siblings: Karen Gimblett (White), Bruce White, Karl White, Linda White, Teresa Swensen (White), and Wanda Garland (White), along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
