ORLEANS – Florence S. Purpura, age 92, passed away peacefully on July 1 at McCarthy Care Center after a short illness. She was born in So. Weymouth, MA to Marcus and Leona Tirrell and was one of the first babies to be born at South Shore Hospital. Florence was a Mayflower descendent of John and Priscilla Alden.
She received an Associate’s Degree from Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene and worked until starting a family. In 1947 she married the love of her life, Frank, and they shared many adventures together. They retired to Wayne, Maine from Orleans where they enjoyed many years; and she most recently returned to Orleans.
Florence had many hobbies including knitting, sewing, and cooking, especially Frank’s favorite: chocolate cake. She would spend many winter weekends at Long Pond in Harwich while Frank ice boated, tending to the beef stew she’d serve for lunch. Florence was very patriotic and attended Memorial Day services and parades, and proudly stood while the U.S. Navy Song played.
Florence leaves a loving and devoted family: daughter, Dianne Higgins and her son-in-law, Rick, and grandsons Joshua Higgins of Nantucket and Matthew Higgins and fiancé, Sheri of Orleans.
Services will be private, at the convenience of the family. Donations in her memory may be made to Hope Health, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.
