

George E. Pettengill, 84, of Brewster, MA passed away on July 12, 2014, after a series of illnesses. He will be mourned by his wife of 62 years, Alta (Porter) Pettengill, and three children; Alan Pettengill of Brewster, Nancy Pettengill of Pittsburgh, PA, and Judith O’Neill (and husband John) of Wrentham, MA. He leaves four grandchildren; Matthew Moudry (and wife Susan), Denise Moudry, Christine Moudry, Caitlin O’Neill, and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Moudry.
George was born October 17, 1929, in Milton, MA. He was the son of Marietta (Brady) and George H. Pettengill, and is predeceased by siblings; Mary Voegtlin, James Pettengill, Kenneth Pettengill, and Frank Pettengill. Every summer was spent in Brewster, MA.
A Sergeant, he served 10-years, and was honorably discharged from the 26th Infantry Division of the National Guard.
He graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Business Administration. Professionally, Mr. Pettengill, “Mr. P” to his friends, worked for Employers Liability Insurance and John Hancock Life Insurance. He received training at Mass General and other area hospitals, and was instrumental in the development of a three state group purchasing program which saved the community millions. This resulted in a job at Greater Boston Hospital Council. The family moved to Pittsburgh, PA where he became Assistant Executive Director of Western Pennsylvania Hospital, from which he retired after nearly 20-years.
In 1985 George returned to Brewster, where he was involved in leadership of many organizations; the Town of Brewster Health and Human Services Committee, where he was recently honored for 18-years of service. George celebrated his 50-year anniversary as a Past Master in the Azure Masonic Lodge in Walpole, MA. He was Chairman of the Town Finance Committee in Walpole, a Past President of the Cape Cod Shriners, a Past Commander of the Cape Cod Power Squadron, and was a Board Member at Fontaine Medical Center in Harwich.
George lived a very full life, enjoying horseback riding, camping, sailing, boating, and watching sports.
Calling hours will be at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldridge Park Way, Orleans, MA 02653, on Wednesday, August 6th from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. with a 10:45 Masonic service. This will be followed by a Memorial Service at Orleans United Methodist Church, 73 Main St, in Orleans at 11:30 a.m.
