George was born on Oct. 9, 1953, in Evansville, IN, to George and Norma Patricia (Henry) Stuteville. George (who went by the family nickname of “Bo”) was a preemie and so tiny his parents bedded him in a dresser drawer. Later, he was joined by a brother and sister. In time, he excelled in sports and journalism. He loved the written word and how to craft a story, and he later went on to be the editor of the student newspaper at the University of Evansville, and eventually graduated from Martin University.
Continuing with journalism as his vocation, George worked at newspapers in Evansville, Fort Kent, Maine, Tell City, Indiana, and Washington DC (where he was the bureau chief for the Indianapolis Star for over 20 years). As a reporter at the Indianapolis Star, George covered more beats than an “Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida” drum solo. George received numerous awards for his reporting and then rounded out his career in Washington, DC, in multiple and successful media roles with a national rural electrical group.
George retired a year ago and he and his beloved bride, Valerie May, set their sights on Cape Cod, moving from their long-time Alexandria, Virginia, home.
George was a man of many talents and passions, including his ukulele, gardening, and biking. He continued to write with a passion. You see, he loved people and was a man of great curiosity.
George is survived by his wife, Valerie; sons, Eric (Stacey) of Indianapolis, George Samuel of Detroit; grandchildren Maya and Eric “Mac”; and siblings Kris Kleiman (Scott) of Evansville, Indiana, and Joe Stuteville (Robyn) of Indianapolis; and many nephews and nieces.
“I tell ya,” George once wryly noted. “It’s better to be lucky than smart. But I’ve been both.” Yes, he was both. And his family and many friends are blessed to have had him walk among us. We will always remember and love you, George Eric Stuteville.
There will be a celebration of life in June; details to follow.
