Helen P. Grogan
November 7, 1926 – July 17, 2021
Helen P. Grogan passed away on the evening of July 17, 2021. Her warmth and graciousness touched all who knew her. Helen was born in Rockford, Illinois and raised on a farm in Caledonia, Illinois, getting part of her early education in a one-room schoolhouse. She went on to college at DePauw University where she met and married the late Wells B. Grogan. Then it was on to New York City and Union Theological Seminary where she earned her Master’s in Sacred Music. Being a pastor’s wife Helen was very active in church life. She also worked as an organist, and as an administrative assistant at both the Smithsonian Observatory in Cambridge, MA and the University of Wisconsin Water Research Laboratory in Madison, WI. She also was an interim Music Director at a church in Reading, MA. While they were in Cambridge, MA Helen and Wells found their dream property on Sheep’s Pond in Brewster, MA where they built a vacation home. It was a gathering place for family and friends and they would retire there in 1987. Helen was a member of the Federated Church of Orleans and was also very active in Habitat for Humanity, being awarded a Spirit of Service award in 2004. She also found time for other interests such as gardening, weaving, cooking, and travel. She is survived by her three children, Martha Grogan of Orleans, MA, Wells (Valli) Grogan of Helensburgh, Scotland, Douglas (Kathryn Boyles) Grogan of Montgomery, TX and 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday August 15th at 4:00 pm at the Federated Church of Orleans, 162 Main St., East Orleans, MA 02643 and a reception will follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity Cape Cod at 411 Main St. #6, Yarmouth Port MA 02675 or to the Federated Church of Orleans c/o Darren Morgan, 162 Main St. East Orleans, MA 02643. I had such admiration and fondness for Helen. She was loved and held in high regard by so many of us at Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod - all who knew and worked with or near her. Such a dedicated, hard working, and effective volunteer, with great smarts and a big heart. Plus it was so delightful and fun to be in her presence. I send my sympathy to all her family.

Beautiful Helen, so soft spoken, with a lovely smile, was a 'bright light' to her family and friends at The Federated Church of Orleans. She will be sorely missed by all. Blessings to Martha, Wells and the entire Grogan Family.
