Helen S. Woods, 99, passed away on January 06, 2019. Born in Mt. Vernon, New York to Charles and Carrie Southard. She attended Cedarcrest College in Allentown, PA where she majored in English. It was there that she met her husband, Brooks. After graduation, they moved back to Mt. Vernon where Helen, an only child, could be close to her parents. Brooks was an Electrical Engineer for Westinghouse and Helen worked for a Credit Bureau. They eventually bought a house in Pearl River NY. Helen is an avid reader and also took up gardening.
Helen and Brooks spent many winter vacations in Jamaica. She remembers the relaxing times spent with Brooks and close friends. Their enjoyment of travel also brought them to Europe, touring through many countries. However, it was while they were vacationing in Orleans that Helen and Brooks fell in love with Cape Cod. So when Brooks retired, they bought property and built a house in Orleans. Helen fondly remembers doing all the cosmetic work and finishing touches to make it a home they would enjoy for the next 30 years. The greatest joy came when they cleared out the back brush and discovered a beautiful pond at the edge of their property! Helen delighted in watching the ducks and sitting peacefully by the water.
In addition to gardening and taking walks on the beach, Helen tried her hand at quilting. She and Brooks took rides exploring parts unknown on Cape Cod. And for 20 years, Helen donated her time at the Thrift Store in Orleans.
Helen is survived by cousins Ellen Garbarino, James Cowling, Jack Cowling, Anne, Tommy, Malcolm Cowling and many dear friends.
