Herbert Frederick Lach Jr.

December 26, 1945March 9, 2020

Herbert Frederick Lach, Jr., of Brewster, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 9, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Herbert Frederick Lach, Jr. on December 26, 1945, in Orange, New Jersey, to Herbert and Helene Lach. Herb grew up in New Jersey, with his sister, Kathryn Moss of North Carolina, and his brothers Douglas Lach of Pennsylvania, and William Lach of Georgia. He attended Bloomfield High School, in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where he and his wife, Cindy, became high school sweet hearts. They were married for 52 years.

Herb graduated from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, in 1967. He became a Regular commissioned officer in the US Army upon his graduation. Herb and Cindy were married on June 6, 1967. Herb became a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War earning his Ranger tab and receiving the Bronze Star among other commendations. Upon arriving home from the Vietnam War, Herb became involved with the rescue of a Vietnamese family. He worked tirelessly writing and communicating with those in the US and Vietnam, who could help sponsor a family and bring them to Orleans. He quietly and expertly coordinated the arrival of the Vo family to the Cape.

Upon returning home from Vietnam, Herb pursued a career in law attending Boston College Law school. He passed the bar on his first attempt, and served his community with honesty and pride, practicing for 40+ years.

Across the community, Herb was a highly respected attorney, often working pro bono for those in need. He was persistent, unfailingly stubborn in his pursuit of justice, and tough as nails, but tender and sensitive, too. He served on the Brewster Board of Appeals not only as a member, but also as Chairman for many years. Herb took pride in being the first male president of the Brewster Ladies Library. He also was instrumental in initiating the student Nauset Middle School and High School Mock Trial programs.

Herb and Cindy raised two loving sons, Mike and Ken, on Cape Cod. They all loved living on Cape Cod and became sailing enthusiasts, taking extended voyages to Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Falmouth and the Elizabeth Islands. Summers also included annual camping trips to the White Mountains and Maine. Herb was a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather, and beloved by so many for his generous spirit, huge yet humble heart, and easygoing humor that always made you smile and laugh.

Herb loved his family dearly. He is survived by his mother, Helene, wife, sons and his grandchildren, Skyler, Sage, Sophia and Ethan, as well as many nieces and nephews, sisters and brothers in law and the family dog, Caper.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Out of an abundance of caution for our family and friends, all services for Herb have been cancelled and will be re-scheduled at a later date. A notice will go out once services have been re-scheduled.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Mr Lach!! I only knew him on a professional level. He helped my Son out of many court cases when he was just a kid. Mr Lach was very smart and caring. If I didn't know better I would say my Son got into a little trouble just so Mr Lach could be his public defender!! He really thought highly of him and so did I!! He was a great Lawyer and could see through all the false charges and really cared whether he was getting paid or not!! R.I.P. Mr Lach and may God bless your family!!

Very sad to learn of Herb's death. One of the first persons with whom I connected upon moving to the Cape in 2013; we had a lot in common and shared many great times together. My condolences to Cindy and the rest of Herb's family.

My sincere condolences to the entire Lach family on the passing of a true gentleman and tireless attorney who I have had the pleasure of knowing and opposing in court for more than 30 years.

As attorneys we are held to a very high standard and our ethical rules require that we represent our clients zealously and within the bounds of the law. Herb, exemplified that and did so with dignity, compassion, passion and humor (when the situation called for it).

His work with the Moot Court teams guided the next generation of attorneys and also, the next generation of young adults even though they do not select the path of law.

His distinguished military career and post-service endeavors illustrated his true commitment to both his country and to humanity.

Please know that he will be missed and remember that the fond memories that you have (as I) are the footsteps where a beautiful soul has traveled. May those memories and thoughts comfort you during this time.
