A long time resident of Orleans, MA and previously of Pearl River, NY, he was born January 13, 1926 in New York City, served his country proudly in the Marine Corps during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded at the battle of Iwo Jima.
He married Elna Lunden in 1947 in New York City. They had two children, Glen Hughes and Lynne Karyl. He was a devoted husband and family man. His wife Elna passed away in 2006 after a long illness.
Herb studied photography with best friend and fellow Orleans resident, Ray Fortier. It was a lifelong passion, in addition to a good game of golf, and his love of Cape Cod. He retired from AT&T in 1998, and will be remembered fondly for his staunch values and good sense of humor.
He is survived by his son, Glen and wife Mary Grace Von Calio of Mariaville, NY and daughter Lynne and husband Michael Cass of Pearl River, NY, and step granddaughter Meredith Cass of St. Louis, MO.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA, followed by his burial in the Orleans Cemetery, Orleans, MA. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com
