Jacqueline S. Peno

July 22, 1924November 6, 2021

- At 97 years old, Jacqueline (Scott) Peno passed away peacefully Nov. 6, 2021 at Seashore Point in Provincetown. A proud washashore to Orleans, Jackie, daughter of Elmer and Grace Scott, spent her early years in Lowell, MA, before moving to Greenfield, MA, with her parents and brother, Donald Scott, where she graduated from Greenfield High School. It was while attending high school that she met the love of her life, Robert R. Peno, whom she married in a private ceremony, her style, June 26, 1944, when he was on leave from the Army. When Bob returned from his service, he and Jackie built a house in Greenfield and eventually moved to Boston where Bob attended New England School of Pharmacy. It was during those early years in the city that Jackie worked at the Better Business Bureau and later the phone company. Before long their son, Stephen S. Peno, came along. It was just a year later that the family moved to Orleans where Bob opened his first pharmacy. Not long after the move their daughter Jane E. Peno was born, completing the family. Jackie was a committed volunteer at Cape Cod Hospital. As a result of this dedication, she was instrumental in the founding of the Orleans branch of the Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary, for which she was the first chairman, in 1968.She later served as president of the governing board. Under her leadership, the organization grew from just 25 members to 189, all in the first year. Hosting garden and home tours, food festivals and several other ambitious events, the star in the auxiliary crown is the bi-annual Holly Berry Fair, which she always participated in. Jackie's hospital interests also included time on the floor each week at the emergency room and the auxiliary thrift shop. A compassionate woman, she could often be found at the Orleans Council on Aging serving food or just bringing some cheer to the clients. Soft spoken, gentle and fair, she was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved to entertain and liked nothing more than hosting her annual Christmas party where she was renowned for her scalloped oysters. It is said, "You were lucky if you got invited." For her personal rewards Jackie enjoyed a challenging hand of bridge, a good book or two and a seat at the beach where she devoured the view, her swims and her books. Jackie is survived by her son Stephen (partner Melora B. North), daughter Jane, grandsons Jessie Peno (Meghan), Benjamin Peno (fiancé Brianna Duprey) and Silas Peno (Katherine Oberwager) and five great grandchildren. Donations may be made to the Orleans CCHA, C/O Rose Gadbois, 132 Namequoit Rd., Orleans, MA 02653 or the Orleans Council on Aging, PO BOX 404, Orleans, MA 02653 A private burial will be held at a later date.

Stephen and Jane,
It is always such an emotional journey when a parent passes on. My heart is with you both.
Your mom was an amazing lady; stalwart, kind, and community minded. We first met twenty years ago when I joined the Orleans Hospital Auxiliary and your mom still attended. Jackie spearheaded the drive for our community to be a part of funding for the Cape Cod Hospital. It is going strong today and one of her most noble achievements.
You are blessed to have been raised by such a kind and loving lady.
