
James (Jim) Harry Knowles, of Brewster, Mass, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024, at the age of 83. He was born at Hyannis hospital in 1941, and grew up in Eastham. He attended Eastham elementary school, Orleans High School, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduation, he started his career at Southern New England Telephone in New Haven, CT, where he met his first wife, Ruth Ann Kennedy. They moved to New Jersey where he joined AT&T and led their productization of the UNIX operating system. They adopted a daughter, Kimberly. Jim retired from AT&T in 1989 and joined Saloman Brothers, and then Coopers & Lybrand, which eventually became PwC. After his retirement from PwC, he divorced, and married Judith (Johnson) Cronin, of Orleans. They settled in Brewster, and spent 17 years traveling to 38 countries, golfing, and enjoying their children and grandchildren in California. In 2023, the Eastham Historical Society produced 3 videos of Jim as part of their Oral History Project (YouTube). He is survived by his first wife Ruth Ann, his sister Anne (Edward), his daughter Kimberly (Phillip), grandchildren Anthony and Tommy, his second wife Judith, step children Sean, James (Monte), Jennifer (Tod), and step grandchildren Sawyer, Piper, and Tallulah.
A celebration of life will be held at on June 23, 2025 from 2-4PM at The Captain's Golf Course, Brewster, MA.
Donations can be made in his name to First Tee Central Coast, which teaches character building and life skills, along with the game of golf, for children of all ages.
