Janet “Boots” Allsopp Hickok, 99, of South Yarmouth and Brewster Massachusetts, passed on peacefully in Chatham Massachusetts on December 9, 2023. She was born in Summit, New Jersey in 1924 to Janet Drake and Albert Edward Allsopp. Janet married Richard Sanford Hickok in 1948; together they enjoyed a half century romance.
Boots was raised in Short Hills and Summit, New Jersey and graduated from Kent Place School in 1942. She particularly enjoyed friends and sports; yearbook entries noted the following traits: “boisterous”, “independence personified” and “class troubleshooter”. Boots completed her education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1946.
In 1948 Boots married Richard Hickok. Over the next five decades, they raised four children and a bevy of dogs, cats and horses. Their early years were spent in New Providence, Summit and Morristown, New Jersey. Dick practiced his accounting career in New York City and worldwide, while Boots spent her time attending to the children and their activities. In addition she volunteered for the local ambulance service and other community organizations. Summers were spent on Cape Cod on a bluff overlooking the Brewster flats in a house called the Beach Barn.
In 1984 Boots and Dick retired to the Cape to enjoy its beauty, and to sail, golf at Eastward Ho, and travel with friends. She was predeceased by Richard in 2000 and her son Sandy in 2020. Following Dick’s death, Boots spent the next 23 years fostering countless friendships and continued to travel the world with her special sense of adventure and love of life.
Mom will be deeply missed by her three children and their spouses: Steve (and Hilary) of Brewster, Jon (and Debra) of Amesbury, and Wendy (and Rick) of Pawleys Island, SC. Her legacy also includes eight grandchildren: Hunter (Steve), Hannah, Drew and Lucas (Jon), Jessie and Molly (Wendy), and Jamie and Courtney (Sandy). To date there are five great grandchildren: Hudson (Hunter and Amelia), Remi (Hannah and Jonathan), Grayson and Madison (Jessie and Gavin) and Liam (Molly and Ian). Mom was known and loved by many from her time in New Jersey and on Cape Cod. Family and friendship was her number one value and she had a myriad of friends who she deeply touched and loved.
