Janet Laine

She was the wife of Roland O. Laine, who died in 2000. They were married in 1990. Her first husband was Donald R. Bishop who died in 1988. Born in West Roxbury, MA, Mrs. Laine graduated from Girls Latin School in Boston and from Middlebury College in Vermont.

Upon graduation from Middlebury in 1943, Jan worked in the Radiation Lab at MIT where she met and married Don Bishop. They lived in Westwood, MA and raised and enjoyed 4 children. Jan was always involved in volunteer work, whether in the schools, League of Women Voters, Garden Club, Scouts, or Little League.

Upon retiring to Cape Cod, Jan connected with Hospice and for a while was Head of the Lower Cape Hospice Volunteers. Always interested in “learning more” she joined the Board of the Friends of Snow Library and took up the lead for the Lifetime Learning Program from good friend Pat Rotman for 3 years. During that time she ran the popular “Life on Cape Cod” course, which she loved doing. Her great joy was running, with Win Harris and Margaret Ostro, the Saturday morning book sale at the library.

During her final years, Jan lived at Heatherwood in Kings Way, Yarmouthport. There she enjoyed making new friends, attending the Cape Cod Symphony, tending to her geraniums, collecting and distributing dragon fly pins, and organizing and leading a low vision program called “The No-See-Ums”. To her many friends she was known as “The lovely Mrs. Laine”.

She is survived by her son Stephen R. Bishop of Worcester, MA; a daughter Susan Sauter of Hudson, MA; a daughter Nancy Cardoza and her husband Bob from Sagamore Beach, MA; and a daughter Julie Shea from Brookline, MA; as well as four granddaughters: Megan, Jessica, Jennifer, and Caitlin; two great grandchildren: Lily and Jack; and many nieces and nephews.

At her request, there are no plans for a service and burial will be in the Orleans Cemetery at a later date. Donations in her memory may be sent to, and will be most welcomed by Habitat for Humanity at 411 Main Street (Route 6A), Suite 6, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.
