Jarvis Hunt Jr.

ORLEANS – Jarvis Hunt Jr. (age 85) passed away on June 22, 2019 at Liberty Commons in North Chatham. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Judith Nims Hunt, his brother Harry Draper Hunt and his wife Elaine, and sister Melinda H. Knight. He also leaves behind his two sons, Jarvis Hunt III and Christopher Nims Hunt and his wife Susan, and five grandchildren, Molly M. Hunt, Jarvis R. Hunt, Heidi B. Hunt, Jennifer E. Hunt and C. Charles Hunt.

Jarvis, the son of the late Jarvis Hunt and Philomena Blaine Hunt, was born in Boston, MA and grew up in North Attleboro, MA. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1951 and Harvard College in 1955. He did his graduate work in Clinical Psychology at Boston University. In 1957 Jarvis began work at Applewild School, in Fitchburg, MA, where he made his entire career as a science teacher, school counselor and Assistant Headmaster.

Jarvis’ passion was Astronomy. He developed an Astronomy program for middle school students, and he began the Astronomy Club through Nauset Newcomers as well as being a frequent Nature and Astronomy lecturer at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. He loved teaching and he and Judy especially enjoyed the many trips they took, chasing solar eclipses around the world.

Jarvis and Judy moved to Cape Cod in 1996 upon retirement from their careers in education in Central Massachusetts and started a bed and breakfast called “The Bay Cottage” in Orleans that they ran for 10 years.
