EASTHAM- Joan Fay (Wuerker) Wright Gironda, 82, passed away quietly on March 26, 2020. Born and raised in Providence, RI, she attended Classical High School, followed by Rhode Island College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Education. She was married to Allan Wright and raised her family of two daughters primarily in East Longmeadow. She remarried to Frank Gironda, who predeceased her. They had a wonderful life together, residing in Longmeadow, and in Orleans and Eastham on the Cape, wintering a few weeks a year in Florida. Together, they enjoyed all that the Cape had to offer. Clamming, art galleries, volunteering at the local theatre, Windmill Weekends & concerts, First Encounter Beach, and Boat Meadow & Rock Harbor sunsets, and especially the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches filled their lives with endless enjoyment.
For holidays and special events, our mother delighted in baking cookies and cakes for family, friends, neighbors, and teachers. She adored the sunshine, Wellfleet oysters, and greeting you with a big, warm, genuine hug. She appreciated a good hand-tossed gourmet pizza and sharing lobsters and steamers with you on her deck. She loved extra sharp cheddar cheese with raw onion, a great Manhattan, and the New England seasons, measuring the snow fall and planting flower boxes. As a passionate reader, one would often find our mother immersed in her daily devotions, prayer labyrinth, and the local Cape Codder newspaper. And when she was not reading, our mother took joy in antiques, thrift stores and yard sales.
Our mother was a longtime member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in East Longmeadow, and later The Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans. She was a breast cancer survivor who embodied grace and kindness with her beautiful smile, cherishing life, her daughters and grandchildren, and community. She is survived by her oldest daughter, Linda Wright of Florida; and Linda’s children Jennifer, Maegan, Kaleigh and Zachary, and Kristen Wright of Maryland, and her children Nikolas and Zoe.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a celebration of our mother’s life will be held at a later date at the convenience of family and friends. Donations in memory of our mother can be made to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Salvation Army, or Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, favorite charities of both our mother and her husband Frank.
