Dr. John Hascall Chapman, 68, passed away at home Sunday, December 30. Born in Washington, D.C., he grew up in Alexandria, VA, where he met the love of his life, Molly (Zearfoss) Chapman, to whom he was married for 47 years. He was educated at Colgate University, the University of Virginia, and Vanderbilt University. In 1975 he joined the cardiology staff of Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, where he practiced medicine for more than thirty years and enjoyed teaching as an associate professor through Geisinger’s affiliation with Thomas Jefferson University. He was recognized as a fellow of the American College of Internal Medicine, the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Interventional Cardiology. In Danville, he and Molly raised two daughters, who were the great joy of his life; were active members of the Grove Presbyterian Church; played tennis and bridge; and vacationed in Eastham, Cape Cod, MA, where they retired in 2006. There, they became avid golfers, members of two choirs at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwichport, and doting grandparents. John also loved good books, his dogs, Cape Cod sunsets, writing, painting, and the Boston Red Sox. Above all, he was a caring and talented physician, a devoted husband, and a proud and dedicated father and grandfather.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11am at Pilgrim Congregational Church. Survivors include his mother, Catherine Chapman Kinney; his wife, Molly (Zearfoss) Chapman; two daughters, Emily Chapman and Erin (Chapman) Thornton; a son-in-law, David Thornton; two granddaughters, Lucy and Hannah Thornton; a brother, Stephen Chapman, and sister-in-law, Linda (Martenson) Chapman; a sister, Catherine (Chapman) Boren, and brother-in-law, Stanley Boren; two nephews, Jonathan Chapman and Todd Boren; and a niece, Catherine (Boren) Holly.
