John was born in Holyoke, MA, in 1941, and met his future wife while Dianne was a junior in high school working in her family’s drug store. He was completing three years of submarine service with the US Navy. He worked for Magna Buick company in Holyoke in the Parts Department and in Sales.
In 1967, after Dianne graduated from UMASS Amherst, they married and moved to Miami, Florida where John received flight instruction and began his college courses at Miami Dade Community College. He began working with the Hialeah Police Department and got his bachelor’s degree in public administration, and a Master’s degree in Human Resources from Biscayne College. Dianne continued teaching and earned her Master’s in Education with Art Emphasis from Florida International University, and did postgraduate studies in the UK.
After 11 years John left the HPD with the rank of lieutenant, having instituted a civilian ID program, setting up a 911 call center, and completing a new police facility which included a gymnasium and a firing range based on the one used by the FBI in Quantico, VA.
In the ‘80s he worked for Imperial Industries as assistant to the CEO. In that capacity he directed the completion of the new company headquarters as well as the maintenance of the company King Air and Bell Jet Ranger. He accumulated over 300 hours of flight experience as co-pilot of that helicopter.
Later he founded Kestrel International Aviation Services, selling and consulting on commercial fixed wing and helicopter sales for 25 years.
Dianne and John Greaney moved to Orleans to be closer to family in 2007, after 40 years in South Florida. He leaves his aunt Mary Bergmann and cousins, nieces and nephews, his wife Dianne (Klimoski) Greaney, and loving in-laws Jan Melikan, Richard (Gretchen) Klimoski, Donald Klimoski, Phil (Sandy) Klimoski, Dan (Marianne Baush) Klimoski.
John was a member of Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary Orleans for many years and a volunteer at the Orleans COA. He was a quiet and gentle man who loved wildlife.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers donation may be made in his name to Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Orleans COA, WildCare of Cape Cod, and the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center.
