John Damon Hallisey of Orleans, MA, passed away at 79 on November 27, 2022, after a brief illness. He is survived by his son Peter John Hallisey and his wife Leigh (Condon) Hallisey, granddaughter Lila Hallisey (all of Natick, MA); cousins Chuck, David, Peter, Steven, and Bill Tately, Carole Tately Benkendorf, and Marjorie (O’Connor) Hallisey (Newton, MA), Peter’s mother. He is the son of the late Irene Tately McLean (2019).
John was born on May 11, 1943, in Brockton, MA. Growing up, he was an avid collector of baseball cards and comic books, a hobby he shared with his son Peter. A graduate of Brockton High School (1961), he was voted “Best Boy” for his academics and athletic achievements on the Football team. He was active in his Class Reunion Committee throughout his life.
Attorney Hallisey received his BA from Bowdoin College (1965) and Juris Doctor degree from Boston University School of Law (1969). Shortly after, he opened his law office in Orleans, specializing in Land Trust and Eminent Domain law. John’s love and knowledge of Cape Cod’s history and geography helped shape his law practice and expertise in cases related to the National Seashore. A familiar face in Orleans for 50 years, John was practicing law at his time of death.
John enjoyed traveling, taking several memorable trips with Peter, including Costa Rica, Amsterdam, and Ireland. In 1982 he fell in love with Quebec City and bought an apartment in the heart of the Old City, a place he generously shared with family and friends. He would spend several weeks there a year, working from the Université Laval Law Library, practicing French, and visiting the Plains of Abraham. Back in Orleans, he enjoyed running on Nauset Beach, and Liam’s onion rings even more. John will be remembered for his dry wit, helping out friends and neighbors, and “Grandpa jokes.”
A Memorial Service will be held at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA on Sunday, December 11th, at 3:00 to 5:00PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Friends of Snow Library in Orleans.
