Jack was born on August 6, 1940 to Katherine and Albert Sundermier in the Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens, NY. During his college years at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY, Jack and his friends rented summer share houses at the Jersey Shore. At one of those beach houses, in the summer of 1967, Jack met the love of his life Joan Ann Langone. They were married shortly thereafter in October 1968. They lived in Bayside, NY as Jack completed his undergraduate degree while working full time and fulfilling his Army Reserve service. He and Joann welcomed their first daughter in the summer of 1969. After moving “across the bridge” in the early 70’s to Saddle Brook, NJ, life was busy while working as an accountant at AMF Corp, adding two more daughters to their family, and completing a Masters degree in Taxation from Baruch College in NYC. In 1978, Jack and Joann moved to Ramsey, NJ where they raised their children and met lifelong friends.
During that time, life was filled with many camping and ski trips, Sunday morning pancakes, fireplace gatherings, and trying out new adventures such as boat ownership, growing vegetables and constant DIY home improvement projects. Jack was the tax manager at Western Union, Mutual of New York and Quest Diagnostics before he retired in 2005. Always the accountant, his passion for numerical precision was a constant. His love and desire to create spreadsheets, covering everything from finances to vacation planning, continued for the rest of his life.
After his first visit to Cape Cod with Joann in 1968, Jack was completely hooked. His lifelong dream to retire to the Cape became a reality in March 2006. There, his life's work paid off, with he and Joann creating “Sun’s Spot”, a haven for themselves and their immediate and extended family to enjoy. There, indelible memories were made; family dinners, sunset cocktail hours, gatherings at the fire pit, cookouts, biking, Crosby beach time, lawn games, grandchildren's performances, and a whole lot of laughter. Beyond the Cape, Jack found endless pleasure in planning the next vacation for him and Joann to explore the
world. He was extremely proud that one of his last trips was the entire family travelling to Portugal for Christmas 2024.
Jack loved a scotch on the rocks, alongside plenty of appetizers of course, and his evenings were not complete without a bowl of ice cream, “large please”. He was a voracious reader, as evidenced by the myriad of books stacked on the shelves in his office. He loved puttering and doing projects in his home, or any daughter’s home that would give him a task. He was immensely proud of his three daughters and took pride in raising a beautiful family.
Jack was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Karen Mankes. He is survived by his cherished wife, Joann; daughters Susan Gallas and husband Ross of Pottstown, PA, and Michele Clark and husband Christopher of Amesbury, MA; son-in-law Michael Mankes of Hingham, MA; and his six adored grandchildren Grant Gallas, Madeline, Lillian and Quinn Clark, and Chloe and Anna Mankes. He is also survived by his sister Janet McNamara, brother Rich Sundermier and wife Diane, and many dear nieces and nephews and their families.
A funeral mass to celebrate Jack will be held on Saturday November 15, 11am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 61 Canal Road, Orleans, MA 02653.
