Kevin P. McDermott, 61, died Christmas Eve in Orleans. He leaves his father James J. McDermott of North Eastham, his brother James E. McDermott and sister-in-law Peggy of Eastham, his brother Brian M. McDermott and sister-in-law Gail of Tewkesbury and sister-in-law Sherrie McDermott of Big Pine Key, FL. He is warmly remembered by nephews Jeremy, Brendon, Jimmy, Dan, and nieces Kelli and Katelyn.
Kevin was born and raised in Worcester. A terrific athlete, he led his high school basketball team to the State finals at the old Boston Garden. An accomplished scholar, he graduated cum laude from Stonehill College.
Smitten by the beauty, simplicity, and wholesomeness of Cape Cod, Kevin set up residence shortly after college. He worked various jobs. He became a skilled mason who ran his own contracting business; he also worked as a commercial fisherman, a salesperson for a local seafood wholesaler, a construction landscaper, and a cook, among other enterprises. He fancied himself a food connoisseur and a music aficionado.
The strip of land and marsh and sea touching Orleans, Eastham, and Wellfleet - Kevin loved especially. Here he enjoyed the simple things that make the Cape special – sunsets, sunrises, quiet walks, fishing, family get-togethers, and launching his boat into the Cove.
To know Kevin was to know his dog. He had a few, and curiously each one captured its master’s spirit and personality – friendly, frolicsome, feisty, kind, gentle, and free.
A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, January 3, at Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans, from 2 pm to 4 pm, with a service at 4 pm. For online condolences please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com.
