HALEY, Lois L. (Smith) died Monday March 12, at Pleasant Bay Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family and caring staff. She retained a quick whit, playfulness and desire to illicit a laugh until the end.
Lois was born in North Hampton, MA and raised in Danvers 96 years ago, to Ivan G. and Bessie M. (Burnham) Smith. After the death of her mother, her Father married Mable Swett, who became “Mother Mae”.
Lois attended school in Danvers, and then graduated from Wheelock College. She taught 2nd & 3rd grades for many years, and later continued her love of teaching children as a volunteer guide at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in Miami.
Lois and her husband Jack established the Marblehead Marine Center on the Harbor in Marblehead, MA. Love of the water and the need for warmer weather led them to Coconut Grove, FL where they raised their family aboard the Yacht Sea Mist at Dinner Key Marina.
In 1993, after the death of her beloved Jack, Lois returned to Marblehead. There she enjoyed volunteering at the MSPCC Lighthouse Thrift Shop and Old North Church.
Lois is predeceased by her husband Jack S. Haley, sister Muriel B. Doucette, daughter Judy R. Daponte, and daughter-in-law Nancy M. Haley.
