

She was born on October 10, 1932, in New York City to Noble Aydelotte and Harriet Anne Patterson Cathcart.
She spent many of her early years with her family in Chatham, Massachusetts, where she and her younger sister, Betty, loved competing in the Chatham Yacht Club’s weekly sailing races in their sailboat, Mutiny.
Lucy Anne attended the Mary C. Wheeler school in Providence, Rhode Island, where she began her lifelong passion for learning. She graduated from Vassar College in 1956 with a degree in history.
Upon graduating from Vassar College, she followed in her father’s footsteps and started a career in the publishing world in New York City.
In 1973, she moved to Summerville, South Carolina, where she was active in local politics, St. Paul’s church and the Dorchester Historical Society. She was also the proud owner of two black Labrador retrievers, Marietta and Joy.
In her adult life, Lucy Anne’s intellectual curiosity ignited her interest in the study of mental illness and she spent much of her time devoted to research while pursuing a doctoral degree.
Always holding special memories of childhood summers spent in Chatham, she moved back to Cape Cod in 2018 and owned several houses in the area before settling in Orleans.
Lucy Anne is preceded in death by her parents, Noble A and Harriet Cathcart and her sister Elizabeth (Betty) Cathcart Tisdel. She is survived by her niece, Anne Tisdel Beecroft, nephew, Curtis Noble Tisdel and niece Elizabeth (Lisa) Tisdel Holmstead as well as numerous cousins and extended family members.
A graveside service is planned for 11am on July 25, 2026, at Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina.
